Vikings Use Free Throws to Knock Off Wolves In OT

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team fought long and hard though two halves and an overtime of playing Saturday, but were not able to pull off the upset over Augustana College as the home Vikings took the victory by a 69-58 final.

With the loss the Wolves fall to 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the NSIC and the Vikings improve their second-place conference record to 13-5, including a 19-6 overall record.  The two teams have now split their regular season matchups, with each team winning their home game.

Offensively, the Wolves went 22-66 for the game (33%), including 7-18 from behind the three point line (38.9%) in another tough shooting night.  They did hand over only nine turnovers during the whole game, but were out rebounded by a 47-38 total after coming into the matchup leading the NSIC in rebounding margin. 

The Vikings did not fare much better in the shooting category, going 18-53 from the floor (34%) and 8-23 (34.8%) from deep.  On major advantage the Vikings were able to use was the free throw line, making 25-32 attempts compared to 7-12 for Northern State.

Freshman Emily Becken led the Wolves in scoring with 14 points, including a stretch to end the first half in which she made consecutive three pointers on three straight trips down the court.  On the night, Becken shot 4-10 from the floor, including 4-6 from three land.  Fellow freshman Mikayla Barondeau recorded her fifth double-double of the season with her 11-point 13 rebound performance, the latter leading the squad in 39 minutes of action.

The Wolves close out the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday when they take on the #21 MSU-Moorhead Dragons inside Wachs Arena in Aberdeen.

Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
