ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University put had four players in double figures for the first time all year and used a 42-8 dominating effort in the paint to race to a 75-52 final over Chadron State College at Wachs Arena Saturday.
The win lifts the Wolves to 4-7 overall on the year and halts a five-game losing streak.
The two teams battled to a 12-12 tie through the first 6:24 of the game before going on a 14-7 run through the next 6:40 to push them out to a seven-point lead 26-19 capped off by a layup by sophomore
Nicky Rausch.
The teams then battled back-and-forth for the rest of the first half with the Wolves holding on to a 34-27 lead at halftime. The first half saw the Wolves build their lead on 22 points in the paint compared to eight by the Eagles, and the Wolves capitalized on nine Chadron State turnovers in scoring 15 points.
The second-half showed a fired-up Wolves squad looking for a win after so many close calls recently by mounting a 12-3 run to start the half to jump out to a 16-point lead 46-30 through the first 4:08 of the half. The run featured two three-point field goals by sophomore
Colleen Doerr who shot 4-5 from the field in the second-half.
The Eagles wanted no part of the Wolves' defense inside the paint, and seemed content to play out on the perimeter in shooting 38 three-pointers on the night, with 25 coming in the second-half alone.
With the Eagles only making six of their 25 second-half three-point attempts, the Wolves continued to increase their lead through the remainder of the game, culminating in a 75-52 final score.
Junior
Jodi Reinschmidt led the Wolves with her first double-double of the season, and the fifth of her career. She scored 12 points and tied her career-high with 13 rebounds, and also had four assists, three blocks, and one steal in 31 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Mikayla Barondeau led the squad in scoring with 15 points, and her eight rebounds brought her close to her third double-double of the year.
Colleen Doerr scored a career-high 11 points, all of which came in the second-half on 4-7 shooting, including 2-5 from behind the three-point line.
Jenna Higgins had her second-consecutive double-figures scoring night, notching 10 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
As a team the Wolves finished with a 10-0 advantage in fast break points, and held an advantage in points off turnovers 24-3.
The Wolves will have some time off over the Christmas Holiday and will return back to action on January 2nd when they host Winona State in an NSIC matchup at Wachs Arena.
