ABERDEEN, S.D. – The battle for Hub City was decided Friday in terms of women's collegiate basketball, when the Northern State University Wolves used 12 three-point field goals en route to a convincing 83-51 win over the Presentation College Saints at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D.
The win improves Northern State's record to 2-1 on the young season.
A slow moving first seven minutes that only saw 14 combined points scored quickly turned into a Northern State shooting clinic featuring lead presenter Emily Becken. The super soph shot 6-6 from the field including 5-5 from three-point land in the first half, totaling 17 of the Wolves' 35 first stanza points.
She only played four minutes of the second half and ended with the 17 points on 6-7 shooting, including 5-6 from the three-point line. She also grabbed six rebounds, stole two passes, and dished out six assists compared to one turnover in 19 minutes on the court. Through the first three games of the season the Lino Lakes, Minn. native is averaging 19.0 points per contest.
The Wolves built a large lead in the second half, as much as 36 points at one point, allowing Coach Curt Fredrickson to give his bench some experience. E ach person active for the game got at least six minutes of action in the contest.
Following Becken was junior captain Jodi Reinschmidt's 11 points on 5-5 shooting, including 1-1 from the free throw line. She also led the Wolves with seven rebounds and added one assist and one block in only 16 minutes of action.
Sophomore Kendra Bornhoft was the only other member in double figures with her 10 points on 4-5 shooting including a perfect 2-2 from three land.
All in all the Wolves shot 32-74 from the field (43.2%) including 12-29 from the three point line (41.4%). They dished out 23 assists compared to just nine turnovers. Defensively they recorded nine blocks and out-rebounded the Saints by nine. They also recorded six steals and forced 14 PC turnovers.
The Wolves are next in action on Saturday, November 28th, when they tangle with the defending national champion Minnesota State Mavericks as part of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest in Sioux Falls, S.D.
