ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University outside hitters
Kayla Ysteboe,
Kelsey Aden and
Jordan Schaffer combined for 36 of the Wolves' 54 kills on the night, while junior middle blocker
Whitney Morsching added five blocks and 10 kills to rally the Wolves to a 3-1 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball action.
The Wolves dropped the first set 25-22, but rallied to take the next three sets by final scores of 25-22, 27-25, 25-17 to claim the overall match win and improve to 11-14 on the season and 6-10 in conference games. UMC slipped to 5-22 overall and 2-13 in league play.
The Golden Eagles got 21 kills from junior outside hitter Amber Meyer, including seven in the first set and eight in the third, but it wasn't enough to counter a balanced Wolves attack and a strong defensive presence both at the net and in the back court. Freshman libero Stephanie Drake had a match-best 21 digs for the Wolves, and was backed by 15 scoops from Schaffer and 13 from setter
Megan Gilbraith.
The Golden Eagles kept things close through each of the first three sets, but ran out of steam in the fourth and final set. NSU jumped out to an early 9-3 lead and never looked back, cruising to the 25-17 victory punctuated by a Claire Kopfman kill to end the match.
The match concludes a 5-match homestand for the Wolves, who go back on the road next weekend to face Winona State and Upper Iowa on Friday and Saturday, respectively. NSU finishes out the 2009 campaign at home on Nov. 13 and 14, facing Minnesota State and Southwest Minnesota State on those dates.
