ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Wolves got a season-high 18 kills from junior outside hitter
Kayla Ysteboe Friday night en-route to their second win in the last three matches and their second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory. That mark tied a career-best for Ysteboe, who committed just two hitting errors on the night to lead the Wolves to the 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead.
With the win, NSU improved to 10-14 overall and 5-10 in NSIC play, while the sixth-place Dragons slipped to 18-9 on the season and 8-6 in conference matches.
Ysteboe also had 22 digs for the third straight match, leading an NSU defensive effort that held the Dragons to a .167 hitting percentage. Junior
Whitney Morsching added four assisted blocks to aid in that effort.
Offensively, junior
Jordan Schaffer continued her series of strong hitting matches with 14 kills on 41 efforts with just three attacking errors to go along with 18 digs and three blocks, while senior
Kelsey Aden added 11 kills on the night.
The Wolves got off to a slow start, as they allowed MSU Moorhead to pull away from a 14-14 tie to take an eventual 21-17 lead. NSU pulled back to within two at 22-20 on a Schaffer kill and a ball-handling miscue on Dragon setter Anna Olson, but a pair of Mary Sussenguth kills and an NSU attacking error gave the Dragons the final three points of the set and the early 1-0 lead.
The rest of the match, however, belonged to the Wolves, as they fended off comeback efforts in each of the last three sets of the match. Ysteboe put down the final kill in sets two and three, and a Dragon attack error on match point gave the Wolves the final victory.
MSU Moorhead got a dozen kills apiece from outside hitters Laura Tvrdik and Heidi Lensing. Freshman libero Katy Ness had a match-best 26 defensive digs.
The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday, taking on the University of Minnesota, Crookston in another NSIC match-up. The Golden Eagles claimed a 3-0 victory over University of Mary on Friday and enter Saturday's match at 5-21 overall and 2-12 in league play. First serve for the match is set for 6 p.m. in NSU's Wachs Arena.
