FAYETTE, Iowa – Led by four players in double figures and a 46.2 percent team shooting effort, the Northern State University Wolves overcame seven 3-pointers by the host Upper Iowa University Peacocks to earn a 67-58 win over UIU Saturday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball action.
The 46.2 percent effort as a team marked NSU's second-best performance of the season, despite an 0-for-7 mark from 3-point range on Saturday. With the win, NSU moves to 7-6 overall on the year and an even 3-3 in league play, while the Peacocks drop to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
The Wolves wasted little time in taking control of Saturday's contest, jumping out to a commanding 26-6 lead midway through the first half and a 37-13 edge at the break. NSU held the Peacocks to just six field goals and a paltry 15.8 percent shooting effort in that half, while getting a balanced scoring effort of their own.
UIU countered with seven 3-pointers in the second half, but did not seriously threaten until late in the game. The Peacocks eventually whittled the NSU lead down to single digits on a trey from Andrea Downs with nine second left on the clock, but it was too little, too late as the Wolves came away with the dominant win.
NSU freshman
Maggie Bryant (Sartell, Minn.) led the way with 13 points for the Wovles, marking her second straight double-digit effort in her second career start. Bryant also had a career-high nine rebounds and finished just shy of a double-double.
Freshmen
Mikayla Barondeau (Frederick, S.D.),
Emily Becken (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Jenna Higgins (Maple Grove, Minn.) each had 12 points for the Wolves, while sophomore center
Krista Rabenberg (Mobridge, S.D.) racked up six blocked shots, all of which came in the first half.
The Peacocks were led by a trio of players with 11 points.
NSU returns home next weekend for a single NSIC game on Saturday. The Wolves will host the University of Mary in Wachs Arena beginning at 6 p.m.
