BOX SCORE
WAYNE, Neb. - The Northern State Wolves rallied late but fell short to No. 2 Wayne State College, 74-65, in the first round of the 2007-08 NSIC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Wolves fell behind early, trailing by as many as 17 at halftime, but got back to within six points in the second half. Senior guard
Jaclyn Arns led the Wolves with a career high 25 points in the final game of her career. The Wolves finish the year with a 12-16 overall record. Wayne State is now 20-8 and moves on to the semifinals, playing the winner of the No. 3 University of Mary/No. 6 Bemidji State game.
From early on in the game, the Wolves were put on their heels by the fast-paced Wildcats. The Wildcats got off to a fast start and went up by seven on a Kylee McGill three-pointer.
Noelle Hall answered with an old fashioned three-point play to cut the lead to four with 10 and half left. However, the senior post would be called for her third foul and the 7:55 mark and would not come back into the game for the rest of the half, a huge loss to the Northern effort.
The Wolves scored just 11 points in the final 8 minutes of play, with the Wildcats taking a big 46-29 lead into the half. The Wildcats shot 14-of-31 from the field and 8-of-15 from behind the three-point line. The Wolves shot only 10-of-28 from the field and only connected on 2-of-6 three pointers they put up. The Wolves were outrebounded in the first half, 21-17, and committed 9 turnovers.
The Wolves sprinted back into the game in the second half, going on a 11-4 run capped by a
Jaclyn Arns three-pointer to trail by only 10 with 16:13 remaining. After a quick timeout, the Wildcats answered with a Jen Yee three-pointer. Hall was sidelined with her fourth foul at the 12:19 mark and would not return until the 6:35 mark. A basket by senior
Amanda Glenz would put the Wolves within six, the smallest spread of the second half. Any momentum that the Wolves had gained quickly fell apart as both Hall and Arns fouled out in big efforts for the Wolves. The Wildcats closed the game going 10-of-10 from behind the free throw line to take the 74-65 first round win over the Wolves.
Arns finished her last collegiate game with a career high 25 points. She was 7-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-6 behind the arc and a perfect 8-of-8 at the stripe. She polished up her career night with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and two steals, and just 1 turnover in 37 minutes of play. Hall played only 20 minutes because of foul trouble but still finished the game in double figures. She scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The Wolves shot 43.6% for the game and 26.7% from the three point line. Northern out-rebounded Wayne 38-33, but had 19 turnovers.
The Cats shot just 38.2% from the field, but blazing 52.9% from the three-point line. They were led by Louisa Cook who put in 20 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Teresa Case finished the game with 16 points, 14 coming in the first half. She was 3-of-7 and 3-6 behind the arc.
