Wildcats Use Long-Ball to Down Wolves 76-55

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team ran into a fiery Wayne State Wildcat squad Friday at Wachs Arena, and fell to the visitors 76-55 in front of 3,354 fans.

The Wildcats used excellent long-range shooting as their m.o. and coasted from a high scoring first-half as they after dropping 46 on the Wolves in the first frame. The Wildcats shot 8-13 from deep for 61.5% and 19-36 overall (52.8%) in jumping out to a 25-point halftime lead. The Wolves shot 26.5% in the first half, including 0-7 from behind the three point line.

 

The second stanza proved to be much better for the home team as they outscored the Wildcats 34-30 behind the shooting of freshman Emily Becken as she went 4-5 from three-point range and accounted for all four of the Wolves hits from deep during the game. Becken also had two assists, three rebounds, and one steal. Sophomore Krista Rabenberg was the only other member of the team in double figures as she went for 16 points on 6-16 shooting, including 4-4 from the free throw line. She also recorded six rebounds, one assist, and four blocks.

 

As a team the Wolves shot 30.9% from the field on 21-68 shooting while their counterparts shot 31-67 for 46.3% in the game. The Wolves shot 23.5% from long range (4-17) while the Wildcats shot 57.1% (12-21).

 

The two teams were relatively even in almost every other statistical category. Wayne had the edge in rebounds (45-44) and turnovers (14-15) while the Wolves had the advantage in blocks (7-3), steals (7-6) and the teams tied in assists.

 

With the loss, the Wolves fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC.

 

They close out the first weekend of their two-weekend home stand tomorrow night when the #25 Augustana Vikings come to town. The tip-off is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
