Wolves Comeback Falls Short

WINONA, Minn. -  Winona State University held on to a nine point victory over the Northern State Wolves on Friday night with a final score of 64-55.  Ryanne Brockhaus kept the Wolves hanging around, tying a career high 13 points and finishing with 7 assists, one below her career high. The Warriors are 15-6 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC. The Wolves are 8-11 overall and 4-6 in league play. 

The Wolves gained control of the tip, but that was all they had control over for the first ten minutes. The Warriors came out on fire and caused the Wolves 8 early turnovers and with the help of  Kelsey Homewood, who connected on two early 3 pointers, led 22-8 at the 10:00 mark.. The Warriors shot 44% from the field the first half, shooting 11-of-25 from the field, and connected on 5-of 10 three-point attempts. 

The Wolves responded and went on an 18-11 run to finish the half. Northern State shot 52% from the field in the first half behind Noelle Hall, who finished the game with another career double double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kayla Schmidt hit a 3 pointer with 2:45 left in the first half to bring the Wolves to within ten  Back to back scoring from Ryanne Brockhaus and Samantha Gacke brought the Wolves within 6 at halftime, with the Warriors leading 33-27. 

With early scoring from the Warriors, the Wolves were down as many as 18 points, 52-43, with 9 minutes left in the second half. The Wolves hung around for the next five minutes, a three pointer by Brockhaus and a jumper by Jessica Peterson brought the Wolves to within 12 with 4:10 left in the game. Back to back baskets by Jaclyn Arns put the Wolves down by 9 with 1:54 left. The next two minutes would be a back and forth rally between the Warriors and the Wolves, with the Warriors pulling away at the end 64-55. The Warriors forced 19 turnovers, 11 in the second half, and held Noelle Hall scoreless the last seven minutes of the game. 

The Wolves shot 51% from the field for the game, finishing 22 for 43 from the field. They also outrebounded the Warriors 29 to 24, but their inability to handle the ball put them in a tough spot from the beginning of the game. Brockhaus finished with a team high 13 points, shooting 50% from the field and dropping 7 dimes in the game. Noelle Hall had another consistent night, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 6-of-10 from the field. 
 
Jenny Steffen led the Warriors with 15 points, shooting 5 for 8 from the field.  Kelsey Homewood finished with 14 points connecting on a game high 4 three pointers. The Warriors shot 44% from the field and 47% from the three-point line, connecting on 8 three-pointers. The Warriors were out rebounded but caused Northern State to turn it over 19 times which led them to a 64-55 victory over the Wolves. 

The Wolves are on the road tomorrow night at Upper Iowa.
