ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Wolves outscored the Huskies of St. Cloud State by more than two to one in the second half of a 74-52 non-conference game Tuesday night at Wachs Arena. The Wolves' rebounding game was especially important in the meeting with the future NSIC foe. Northern is now 7-3 on the season while the Huskies fall to 4-5.
A second half scoring run for the Wolves distanced the teams, who were nearly tied up at the half. Northern posted a 17-2 run to take a 60-45 lead late in the final period, with points coming from numerous Wolves. NSU's dominance on the boards gave them multiple second looks at the bucket.
The Huskies struggled to find their mark in the second half, hitting just five field goals all period and posting a 23.8% shooting percentage. The Wolves' lead continued to climb in the second half, reaching a high of 22 points as the final score rested at 74-52.
The first half of the game was also highlighted by runs, but with both teams battling for the lead. St. Cloud State rallied from an early 14-7 Northern run with a 24-8 run, taking a 31-22 lead with five minutes left in the first. The Huskies were successful in back door cuts and lobs under the basket for easy buckets. They also frustrated the Wolves with pressure in the backcourt, resulting in trunovers and fast break points. The Wolves came back to take a 34-33 lead at the intermission.
The Wolves hit 51.0% (26-51) of their shots on the night and rebounded twice as many balls as the Huskies. They kept St. Cloud to just 21 boards, the lowest amount by any NSU opponent this season, and grabbed 42 rebounds of their own for a season high +21 rebounding margin.
Noelle Hall was a staple for the Wolves both offensively and defensively Tuesday night. She hit eight field goals and seven free throws for 23 points and nabbed 14 boards, 12 of which came on the defensive end. Hall also dished out five assists for the third straight game.
Jaclyn Arns had 12 points and four steals for the Wolves, while
Kimberly Lewis and
Amanda Glenz each posted nine points and four rebounds.
Kayla Rengel was the leading scorer for the Huskies with 18 points. She also had five rebounds and four assists. Rachel Booth had 14 points and a team high six rebounds while dishing four assists and creating three steals. The Huskies shot 35.8% from the field and had 21 rebounds.
