ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State's women's basketball team clinched a 58-53 win over Winona State Saturday evening at Wachs Arena. The Wolves separated themselves from the Warriors with rebounding and outside shooting. Northern is now 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC, while the Warriors are 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Jaclyn Arns had a 14 point second half, sinking 7-of-8 shots from the free throw line. She also hit a set of threes in the game and had three assists. The Warriors held Noelle Hall to just a single basket in the first half, but the Wolves found a way to get her more touches in the second half, and she finished the game with ten points and 11 rebounds, her sixth double-double out of the season's seven games.
The game went into overtime knotted up at 25-25. The Warriors had the edge in shooting, hitting 45.5% of shots while the Wolves connected on only 32.1%. The Wolves had a five-rebound advantage in the half, taking 20 to WSU's 15. NSU's three-point shooting kept the score close. The Wolves hit six threes in the first half, including their first three field goals.
The lid was shut tight on NSU's hoop for the first minutes of the second half, but they heated things up as the game progressed. The Wolves put together a 13-3 run that covered five minutes and finished with NSU leading 48-35 with just over five minutes to play. The Warriors held Northern scoreless for two minutes and went on a 7-0 run to draw within six points, but Northern held on for the win, 58-53.
Arns finished the game with 17 points to lead all players in scoring. Hall was the only other NSU player with double figures. Glenz followed Hall's 11 rebounds with eight of her own. The Wolves shot 34.7% from the field and out-rebounded the Warriors 39-30. They sunk seven three-pointers and had 17 made free throws.
Winona State had two players with a team high ten points, Jamie Majerowicz and Anna Wurtz. Wurtz also had a team high rebounding mark of five. The Warriors shot 39.2% from the field, although a lower second half performance is what opened the door for the Wolves.
Northern State hits the road in continued NSIC play next weekend. They will head to Marshall, Minn. to play Southwest Minnesota State on Friday and Wayne, Neb. to take on Wayne State on Saturday. Northern returns home on December 11, hosting St. Cloud State in a non-conference game.
