Mayville State Defeats Northern 79-73

MARSHALL, Minn. - 13 three-point shots from Mayville State (4-4) was the deciding factor in a 79-73 Comets win on Saturday afternoon at the SMSU Invite at the R/A Facility in Marshall, Minn.  The Wolves are now 3-2 on the season and return to Wachs Arena to open the NSIC schedule on Friday, November 30.

The Wolves trailed by six points, 30-36, at the half.  Megan Kusler rattled off 12 first half points to keep NSU in the game.  The Comets' Cassie Leraas hit five of the team's six first half threes and had 18 points by the intermission.  MSU shot 44.8 percent in the half while Northern shot 35.3 percent.

Northern took advantage of missed Comet thre-point attempts in the opening minutes of the second half and went on a 6-0 streak to tie the game up at the 17:37 mark.  Kusler and Noelle Hall answered Mayville's following buckets and Northern took its first lead of the game, 42-41 with 15:12 to play.  

The teams went back and forth for the next ten minutes.  The Comets attacked with continued three-point shots while the Wolves answered with an inside game.  Northern's largest lead of the game came following a Jaclyn Arns jumper in the paint and a Kusler free throw, leading 57-54 with 7:33 remaining.

Northern fouls sent the Comets to the stripe in the late minutes, where they regained the lead and sealed the win.  MSU made 13 of 15 free throws in the final 2:20 of the game.

Kusler's career high 18 points came from 5-of-11 shooting from the field.  She hit three long balls and 5-of-6 free throws.  She also dished out four assists.  Hall had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists against Mayville.  Arns also connected on a trio of three-pointers and shot 6-of-9 from the field for 15 points.  The Wolves shot 41.0 percent in the game and led on the boards 37-32.  The Wolves committed just three turnovers in the game, the lowest number of turnovers for Northern since they had three against Wayne State in December of 2000.

Mayville's Cassie Leraas hit seven three-pointers and had 28 points on the afternoon.  Laura BigCrow had a double-double for the Comets with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Mayville shot 42.9 percent in the game.  They hit 18-of-21 free throws for 85. percent and had just six turnovers.
