Northern Softball Opens NSIC Schedule with Win against Minnesota State

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team opened their home slate and the NSIC season on Friday with a split against Minnesota State. The Wolves rallied from behind in game one, securing the win, and fell in game two following a pair of multiple run innings by the Mavericks.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
  • Northern fell behind by two after two complete, however knocked out four runs on four hits in the fourth
  • Madi Jones kicked off the rally with a 1-out single to center, followed by a single through the left side by Avarie Eagle
  • Emma Owens loaded the bases for NSU on a single through the left side, while Brooke Wolf (pinch running for Jones) scored the first run of the game on an infield ground ball by Courtney Hennen
  • Aune Boben doubled to left center the following at-bat, clearing the bases and giving the Wolves a 4-2 lead
  • Boben extended that lead in the sixth, sending a long ball over the right center field; a 2-run shot scoring Brooke Carlson who led off the inning with a double
  • The Mavericks threatened in the seventh with two runs, however starter Abby Rux made it out of the jam, leaving the game tying runners on base
  • The Wolves scored their six runs on nine hits and did not give up an error
  • Rux tallied her fourth win of the year, holding the MSU offense to four earned runs with five strikeouts
  • Four Wolves notched tow hits in the game including Boben, Jones, Eagle, and Carlson, while Boben added a team leading five RBI

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
  • The Mavericks tallied a run in the top of the first, however Aune Boben tied the score in the bottom of the frame with her second home run of the afternoon
  • MSU took the lead again in the third with two runs and extended it to 4-1 with one run in the fourth
  • Northern stormed back in the fourth, led off by a lead-off single down the right field line by Tevan Bryant
  • Madi Jones reach on a hit-by-pitch and Avarie Eagle sent one soaring over the right center fence to tie the game at 3-all
  • Minnesota State ran away with the contest in the sixth and seventh, scoring six and five runs respectively, and kept the Wolves off the base paths in their final two innings at the plate
  • Dessa Bryant entered in relief for NSU in the third, suffering the loss
  • Tevan Bryant led the team at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3, while Boben and Eagle tallied home runs and Courtney Hennen added a double
