Wolves Gear up to Take on Cardinals in Season Opener

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State baseball team is set to face off against William Jewell College in a four game weekend to open the 2024 season. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 23, second the third game are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, and the fourth game starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 25 from Liberty Mo., against the Cardinals.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • Northern State went 11-31 (6-25 NSIC) during the 2023 season, finishing 14th in the league standings
  • In the 2024 NSIC Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll the Wolves were picked to finish 13th in the conference with 31 points
  • Max Otto was selected as NSU's pitcher to watch after going 1-8 last season along with pitching 73.1 innings with an ERA of 4.79 and 76 strikeouts
  • Karson Hesser was selected as the Wolves's player to watch this season after batting .245 with 39 hits, six doubles, and four homeruns with 22 RBIs
  • Last season Northern State hit .270 with 352 hits, 76 doubles, one triple, and 39 homeruns with 193 RBIs and 219 runs scored
  • Dean Berry enters his 14th season at the helm, he holds and record of 234-311 during his time at Northern
 
WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE STORYLINES
  • William Jewell went 30-23 (17-15 GLVC) during the 2023 season, finishing seventh in the league standings
  • In the 2024 GLVC Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll the Cardinals were picked to finish seventh in the conference with 97 points
  • Chandler Ashby went 10-1 in the 2023 season with 78.1 innings pitched, 3.68 ERA, and 85 strikeouts
  • Alex Epp was the top hitter for the Cardinals, hitting .435 with 80 hits, 16 doubles, one triple, eight homeruns, 55 runs, and 49 RBIs last year
  • Last season William Jewell hit .309 with 514 hits, 116 doubles, 13 triples, and 50 homeruns with 364 RBIs and 410 runs scored
  • Mike Stockton enters his 23rd season as head coach for the Cardinals
