Northern State Swimming Set for SDSU Triangular

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State swim team set's their sights on the road for the first time this season as they travel to compete at the SDSU Triangular on Saturday night. The Wolves will compete in a dual meet against NCAA Division I's South Dakota State and NJCAA national contender Iowa Central Community College. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Marshall Center Pool in Brookings.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • Northern State enters the SDSU Triangular with a dual meet record of 3-1 on the season
  • In their last outing the Wolves defeated MSU Moorhead in a dual meet for the first time in program history, winning by a score of 117-81
  • Lilly Grebner was named the NSIC Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season after her performance against the Dragons, swimming to two individual event wins and was part of a relay victory
  • Grebner swam to a 21.1 second victory over second place in the 400 yard IM, hitting the wall in a Northern State freshman record time of 4:36.97
  • Grebner's 400 yard IM time of 4:36.97 ranks first in the NSIC and tenth in NCAA Division II
  • In the NSIC Grebner also ranks second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:56.73), third in the 100 yard butterfly (58.36), and tenth in the 50 yard butterfly (28.36)
  • Through three meets this season, Northern has won 13 events with 33 top-3 placings in individual events and has won seven relays
  • Lilly Grebner and Haley Osborne have each won a team-high four individual events this season
  • Osborne has notched event wins in the 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 yard freestyle events for the Wolves this year
  • In the conference, Osborne currently ranks 12th in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:31.88)
  • Maddie Gonzales has won two races for NSU this season in the 200 yard IM (2:22.13) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.99)
  • Gonzales currently ranks ninth in the NSIC in the 50 yard backstroke (28.98) and tenth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.30)
  • Lauren Forsyth has recorded a pair of top-3 finishes this season and ranks sixth in league in the 50 yard butterfly (27.69) and seventh in the 100 yard butterfly (59.92)
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE STORYLINES
  • South Dakota State enters the weekend with an 0-1 record on the season
  • The Jackrabbits dropped their season opener to Nebraska last Friday by a score of 151-111
  • Elisabeth Timmer won two of four events for SDSU against the Huskers, winning the 100 yard freestyle (52.29) and the 100 yard IM (59.60)
  • South Dakota State's other two event winners were Sianna Downes in the 50 yard backstroke (27.57) and Katie Pattee in the 50 yard freestyle (25.11)
  • The Jackrabbits were picked to finish fifth in the Summit League Swimming & Diving Preseason Coaches' Poll following a fourth place finish at the 2022 Summit League Championships and a 3-5 dual meet record a season ago
  • Timmer and Aleni Stoakes were tabbed as the SDSU Swimmer and Diver to Watch this upcoming season by the Summit League; Timmer holds school records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events
  • Doug Humphrey is in his sixth season as the head swimming and diving coach for the SDSU men's and women's programs

IOWA CENTRAL STORYLINES
  • Iowa Central is coming off a third place finish at the 2022 NJCAA National Championships last March, the Tritons compiled eight top-3 finishes and one national champion as Lily Wright claimed the title in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.86)
  • Maria Goncalves is the top returner for ICCC, she recorded two top-3 finishes at the NJCAA Championships in the 50 yard backstroke (27.61) and the 100 yard backstroke (58.37)
  • Leticia Dias also returns after last years appearance at the national championships where she recorded a pair of top-5 finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (1:56.90) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:14.05)
  • Bryce Pierce is the current interim head women's swimming coach for the Tritons
