Northern State Closes Out Dual Season with Tri-Meet against Golden Bears and Mustangs

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State swim team will compete in one final home meet in the 2021-22 season, as they welcome Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State for a tri-meet. The meet is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start time on Friday at the Aberdeen YMCA.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • Northern State enters their final dual meet of the season with a record of 2-4 on the season
  • The Wolves last competed in the UMary Pentathlon on January 22nd, where Maddie Gonzales claimed the individual title with a total time of 3:02.70
  • In the meet against the Marauders, the Wolves captured six of the top eight overall placings
  • Northern won three events in the pentathlon, Marialuisa Avila won the 50 yard butterfly (27.14), Mayson Sheldon won the 50 yard breaststroke (32.50), and Haley Osborne won the 100 yard IM (1:04.30)
  • Gonzales earned top-6 placings in all five events, including second place in the 50 yard backstroke (28.46) and third place in the 100 yard IM (1:04.95)
  • Gonzales holds the third fastest time in the conference in the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.31), and Lauren Forsyth holds the third fastest time in the 200 yard butterfly (2:09.52)
  • The 800 yard freestyle relay team of Brianna Back, Fanny Legros, Connor Doran, and Haley Osborne holds the ninth fastest time in the NSIC, hitting the wall in a time of 7:57.40 at the Augustana Invitational
CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL STORYLINES
  • Concordia-St. Paul enters the dual meet with a record 0-9 on the season
  • The Golden Bears last competed at the Dragon Invite on January 14th and 15th, placing fifth with a total 408 points
  • Farida Maher won the 100 yard freestyle (54.62), 200 yard freestyle (1:58.25), 500 yard freestyle (5:11.38), and the 1650 yard freestyle (17:49.38) at the Dragon Invite
  • The only other CSP victory of the meet came from Laura Vekony in the 200 yard butterfly (2:24.18)
  • Maher has recorded NCAA B Standard times in the 100 yard freestyle (52.10) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.72), her times rank first and second in the NSIC respectively
LOOKING BACK TO 2021
  • Northern State hosted Concordia-St. Paul for the first ever dual match-up between the two programs on October 1, 2021, the Wolves earned a 132-64 victory in the Homecoming Tri Meet
  • Northern leads the all-time series 1-0
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE STORYLINES
  • Southwest Minnesota State enters the dual meet with a record of 8-1 on the season
  • SMSU last competed on January 21st, when they earned a 188-65 win over Minnesota Morris
  • The last invite that NSU and SMSU both competed in was the Augustana Invite in mid-November, the Mustangs finished eighth place and was 61 points behind the Wolves who finished seventh
  • Natalie Bohnert is the reigning NSIC Swimmer of the Week, following victories in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.67), 100 yard butterfly (1:00.97), and the 400 yard IM (4:48.24)
  • Bohnert holds the seventh and eighth fastest times in the conference in the 100 yard backstroke, with times of 57.26 and 57.36 at the Augustana Invitational; her time of 2:06.24 in the 200 yard backstroke ranks seventh in the NSIC
LOOKING BACK TO 2019
  • Northern State and Southwest Minnesota State last competed on November 15, 2019; the Mustangs won the first ever dual match-up between the two programs by a score of 143-133
  • Southwest leads the all-time series 1-0
