Softball Drops Two to No. 1 Augustana from Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team faced off against the No. 1 team in the country, Augustana University on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves fell in game one, but battled and held with the Vikings in the game two loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rachel Reinke scored Emma Terveer on a double to right center in the top of the third, grabbing the Wolves first and only run of the contest
  • Augustana answered back in the bottom of the frame, notching nine runs on eight hits
  • Elyse Cuttic suffered the loss, giving up eight runs in 2.1 innings of work
  • Andrea Cherney entered in relief, throwing 1.2 innings with one hit, one earned run, and two strikeouts

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern held a 3-0 lead through their first three innings offensively
  • Shelby Novotny tallied a homerun to right center in the second, scoring Chanel Siebenthal, and Natalie Gabbert plated Rachel Reinke on a sacrifice fly to right in the third
  • Augustana cut into the Northern State lead in the bottom of the third, notching two runs on a homerun of their own
  • The Wolves were not done, grabbing two more runs in the following frame on a 2-run homerun to right center by Emily Charchuk
  • The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, took a 1-run lead in the bottom of the fifth, and held the Wolves scoreless in their final two offensive innings
  • NSU scored their five runs on five hits, giving up one error defensively
  • Meghan Anderson suffered the game two loss, her ninth of the season, giving up four earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts
