Wolves Softball Tallies Walk-off Victory over SMSU

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team split with Southwest Minnesota State in non-conference action Sunday afternoon. The Wolves tallied a come from behind win in the opening contest and fell via run rule in the second.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the third straight game, the Wolves opponents took scored the first runs of the game, notching one in the top of the first
  • Northern tied the game in the bottom of the third, on a Kennady Thompson single to left center, scoring Chanel Siebenthal
  • Thompson plated the Wolves game winning run in the bottom of the seventh as well, scoring Siebenthal
  • Siebenthal tallied a 2-out single up the middle in the seventh, keeping Northern's hopes alive
  • Thompson stepped to the plate and knocked a double down the right field line, sealing the victory for NSU
  • Northern tallied two runs on six hits, without giving up an error defensively
  • Meghan Anderson threw a complete game, notching her sixth win of the 2021 season

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern struck in their first at-bats of the game as Makenzie Merritt singled in Rachel Reinke for the lead
  • Southwest quickly answered back, scoring early and often with three runs in the first, five in the second, and three in the third
  • The Wolves rallied back for two runs in the fourth off the bat of Shelby Novotny with a homerun to center, plating Merritt as well
  • Northern however was unable to cut the lead to under eight and ultimately fell via run rule
  • Elyse Cuttic suffered her third loss of the season, throwing 1.2 innings, while Andrea Cherney entered in relief
  • NSU recorded three runs on seven hits, giving up three errors defensively
