Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced yesterday the 2020 baseball preseason coaches' poll. Northern State sits at number seven in the poll with 112 points. Augustana was picked to win the conference.
Northern State enters the 2020 season after posting a 26-25 record overall and 20-16 mark in the league, finishing seventh in 2019. The Wolves qualified for the NSIC Tournament, going 1-2 with a win over Minnesota Crookston.
John Poldberg and
Luke Chevalier broke five single season and career records on the hill, leading the Wolves in relief and starting roles. Chevalier earned All-Conference and All-Region accolades in his senior campaign, and wrapped up his NSU career as a 26th round pick in the MLB draft. NSU returns 22 players for a season ago, including five starters in the field and four starting pitchers.
Hayden Houts and
Cody Curfman were named the team's players to watch heading into the 2020 campaign. Houts led the team hitting .346 on the year, while Curfman posted a 3.59 ERA and 4-4 record in his first season with the Wolves. Northern opens the 2020 season at US Bank Stadium as they take on St. Cloud State in the 3-game non-conference series. NSU will then face off against Regis and travel to the RussMatt Invitational, before opening league play at Wayne State in mid-March.
