Jen Martin's comeback grand slam leads Wolves softball over Wheeling Jesuit

Clermont, Fla. – The Northern State University softball team opened THE Spring Games with a Friday split versus Wheeling Jesuit and Saint Rose. The Wolves defeated WJU and fell to STR, moving to 4-2 overall this season.

GAME 1 – WHEELING JESUIT
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first frame.
  • Madison Rutter answered back scoring Rachel Reinke on a single up the middle in the top off the second.
  • WJU extended their lead with two more runs in the second and third.
  • Jamie Fisher singled to left center in the top of the fourth, scoring Sara Bendt and Courtney Sjerven who singled to left and walked in the inning.
  • Jen Martin came up big with a grand slam in the top of the sixth, a blast to centerfield. Sjerven, Julia Sullwold, and Cassidy Schaar (pinch running for Kennady Thompson) all scored on the play after reaching base via a walk, a single, and a single.
  • The Wolves recorded seven runs on 13 hits, with two errors on defense.

GAME 2 – SAINT ROSE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights nabbed the first three runs of the game in the top of the second inning.
  • Madison Rutter tied things at 3-all in the bottom of the fourth with a long ball to left center field. Rachel Reinke and Kaitlyn King scored on the play, after hitting back-to-back singles to open the inning.
  • Sara Bendt followed with a single through the left side and was plated on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cassidy Schaar, which tied the game at four.
  • A 5-walk sixth inning gave Saint Rose the lead, and the Golden Knights tacked on another run in the top of the seventh.
  • Northern tallied four runs on eight hits and did not give up an error.
