Fargo, N.D. – In the first day of the NDSU Bison Open, the Northern State quad of
TJ Hochstetler,
Bryce Malsam,
Kelson Brewer, and
Dakota Hutzler tallied six season best and five personal best marks competing heptathlon and pentathlon. Hochstetler led the way for the Wolves currently in sixth overall with 2,637 points.
The senior opened competition with a personal best time of 7.49 in the 60m dash. He then led the way for the Wolves in the long jump taking fourth overall with a 6.53m mark. Another personal record fell for Hochstetler in the third event of the afternoon, as he threw 10.58m in the shot put. Hochstetler moved on to the high jump and knocked out a season best mark of 1.88m, which was the top Division II jump in the event.
Malsam kicked off competition finishing seventh in the 60m dash with a season best time of 7.45. He also tallied marks of 6.17m in the long jump and a season best 9.97m in the shot put. Malsam landed in the top-10 of the high jump at 1.85m. The junior ended his day in 12
th overall with 2,507 points.
Brewer opened his day taking fifth in the 60m dash with a personal best time of 7.43, as the top finishing Wolf in the event. Brewer added marks of 5.83m in the long jump, a personal best of 10.30m in the shot put, and a season best of 1.61m in the high jump. The junior finished the first day of competition in 15
th overall with 2,262 points.
Hutzler tallied season bests in the high jump (1.51m) and 60m hurdles (9.91), as well as a personal best of 8.64m in the shot put.
The heptathlon will resume competition tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m run. Northern will also compete in full team action at the DWU Alumni Open beginning at 10 a.m. in Mitchell.
