Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team split with University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday at Fossum Field by the scores of 6-0 and 6-8. With the split, the Wolves move to 15-17 overall and 8-12 in NSIC play.
Wolves started the scoring in the second inning on a single up the middle by
Hayden Hall that scored
Kolin Kubitz. In the third inning, NSU pushed three runs across on a fielder's choice that scored
Lucas Lorenz, next batter Jeffery Disla grounded out to third base that scored
Justin Barreneche. Hall smacked a double down the left field line to knock in his second run of the game scoring Kubitz to take a 4-0 lead after three innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Mikey Adams knocked in a run on his double that scored Lorenz. Wolves tallied one more run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Barreneche to give the Wolves a 6-0 victory in game one.
Wolves tallied 13 hits in game one, led by
Jack Schmidt and Barreneche with each of them notching three hits in the game. Kubitz went 2-for-4 in game one with two runs scored and one run batted in. Hall notched two hits in three plate appearances knocking in two runs. Lorenz tallied a 1-for-4 showing for the Wolves scoring two runs.
Dakota Stilson recorded one hit in three plate appearances. Adams notched one hit in two plate appearance while also driving in two runs.
Luke Chevalier pitched his third shutout of the season improving to 4-3 going 7.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits, walked one batter and struck out nine.
Minnesota Duluth lead from the beginning and never gave the lead back as they scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. The Bulldogs added three more in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0. Duluth added one insurance run in the six to take a 7-0 lead. Northern State answered with one run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Schmidt that scored Hall. Bulldogs answered with one in the seventh to push the lead back to seven. NSU would fight back with one run in the seventh inning on a run batted in groundout by
Hayden Houts that scored Lorenz. NSU added one more run in the eighth inning on double by
Ben Carolin that scored Kubitz to make it a 3-8 game heading into the ninth. Wolves pushed three runs across on a passed ball that scored Lorenz, Houts grounded out to the second baseman and that scored Barreneche, and Kubitz smashed a double to right center that scored
Carter Erickson. Wolves managed to bring the tying run to the dish but could not record a hit as NSU fell in game two 6-8.
Northern State out-hit the Bulldogs 11-10 in game two, Lorenz finished game two with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate scoring two runs. Carolin notched two hits in four plate appearances also driving in one run. Kubitz notched his second straight two hit game, scoring one run, and driving in one runner. Barreneche tallied a 1-for-4 game with one run scored.
Jordan Malainey recorded a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning. Hall tallied one hit in four plate appearances. Adams notched a hit for the Wolves in the loss.
Sam Krapf took the loss on the mound going 3.0 innings giving up six runs, on six hits, walked two, and struck out two.
Mike Wiesmann pitched 5.2 inning in relief giving up two runs, on four hits, walked three hitters, and notched four strikeouts.
Andrew Nichols came in relief with the bases loaded in the ninth and got the only batter he faced to ground-out to Adams.
Northern State will be back in action tomorrow against Minnesota Duluth at Fossum Field for Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to start around 3:30 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
