Clermont, Fla. – The Northern State University softball team dropped both of their contests on day three of the PFX Games falling to Ursuline, 4-3, and Saint Anselm, 13-3 in five innings. The Wolves move to 5-5 overall this season and 3-3 from Florida.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of game one, the Wolves rallied for a combined three runs in the fourth and fifth.
Katie Uittenbogaard stepped to the plate with the base loaded, and singled to right field scoring
Kennady Thompson who had reached base on a single to center. Northern then took the lead in the fifth on a Thompson single to center, scoring
Shayla Steinley and
Courtney Sjerven who reached base via a fielder's choice and single. Ursuline however battled back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take and lead, and the Wolves were unable to answer.
Thompson led the team going 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Uittenbogaard also tallied two hits for the Wolves, while adding one RBI. Sjerven and Dawson combined for the final two team hits in the game.
Jamie Fisher started for the Wolves throwing six innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Saint Anselm was too much for the Wolves in game two, as the Hawks scored in four of the five innings played. SAC tallied four runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and six in the fourth securing the run-rule win. Northern battled notching one run in the first, second, and third, but it was just not enough to keep the game alive.
The Wolves tallied five team hits including singles from Sjerven, Thompson, and
Madison Rutter, while Helgeson and
Makenzie Merritt each recorded a double.
Kaitlyn King, Thompson, and Merritt combined for the three team RBI.
Northern returns to action on Tuesday versus U of Missouri, St. Louis and Concordia College, NY. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. (CT) and 2 p.m. (CT) from Minneola Park.
