Clermont, Fla. – The Northern State University softball team went 1-1 on Tuesday from the Minneola Softball Complex with a 5-0 win over Concordia College NY and 11-1 loss to U-Missouri St. Louis. Northern is now 6-6 this season and 4-4 from Florida.
UMSL scored early and often in game one, notching one run in the first, four in the second, one in the third, and five in the fourth as they defeated the Wolves by run rule. Northern tallied their lone run of the contest in the bottom of fourth as
Shayla Steinley singled in
Kaitlyn King who kicked off the rally with a 2-out single to third base.
The Wolves tallied a combined six team hits, as
Courtney Sjerven,
Kennady Thompson,
Katie Dawson, King, and Steinley each notched singles, while
Katie Uittenbogaard tallied a double.
Makenzie Merritt and
Michelle Lanam threw for the Wolves, while Merritt getting the start and suffering the loss.
NSU bounced back in game two, scoring first with two runs in the top of the first. Sjerven led off the game with a walk and came around to score two at-bats later, as
Jenna Helgeson singled to right. Helgeson stole second and came around to score on a single to left by Thompson.
The two teams went scoreless through the middle innings, with Northern notching two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Jamie Fisher opened the sixth inning with a single up the middle, followed by a pinch hit double to left center by
Cassidy Schaar. The pair crossed home plate via an error by the Clipper second baseman. Thompson scored the final run of the game for the Wolves on a sacrifice fly by King in the top of the seventh.
Fisher led the team both offensively and on the hill. The junior went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, while also earning her fourth win of the season. She threw seven complete innings in her first shutout of the season, giving up just three hits and striking out six.
Thompson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI, while Helgeson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI as well in the win. Steinley, Dawson, King, and Schaar combined for the final four hits, as Northern belted out 11 total.
The Wolves return to action tomorrow with a double header against Holy Family and Nyack College at 1 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) from Hancock Park.
