Late period comebacks and extra point victories lead Wolves over Marauders

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team came from behind to defeat the University of Mary, 24-12 in NSIC action on Wednesday evening. The Wolves notched their first NSIC victory of the season and improved to 2-1 overall. Northern tallied seven straight victories through the middle weights, including two extra point wins.
 
Despite a two tough battles in the opening bouts of the dual, the Wolves trailed 9-0 heading into the 141-pound match. No. 9 Kolton Roth turned things around for NSU recording a 12-10 sudden victory win over No. 8 Hunter Eckert. Eckert scored first, however Roth battle back with four points taking a 4-2 lead heading into the second. Eckert then regained the lead with seven points, and Roth began to chip away notching a reversal in the second. The freshman started the third period on bottom and tallied his second reversal of the match, before cutting Eckert lose. He tied things at 10-all with a late period takedown in the third, and scored first in the opening seconds of the first overtime period.
 
No. 12 Caden Moore continued the Wolves attack in the following match, with a 5-3 decision win over Max Bruss. Moore opened the scoring with a takedown in the first, and added an escape in the second and takedown in the third to seal his victory. Following the win, Northern trailed UMary 9-6 with six matches to wrestle.
 
Walker Carr got to work early in the first period with back-to-back takedowns and a 4-point nearfall. The redshirt sophomore added a takedown to end the period, taking a 10-2 through the first. Isaac Berger defended well in the second, holding Carr scoreless however, the Wolf was not done yet. Carr grabbed his final takedown in the third and locked up riding time to secure the 13-3 major decision win. His extra point victory gave the Wolves their first team lead of the dual.
 
Billy Holtan kept things rolling for NSU with a 10-6 decision victory over Austin Eichmann. Holtan trailed 6-3 through the first two periods, but rallied back in the third. The sophomore chose down to begin the period, and quickly grabbed an escape point. He moved to his offense and notched a takedown to tie the match at 6-all, followed by four back points as the clock wound down.
 
Paxton Mewes hit the mat for the first time this season, taking on Phillip Springsteen in the 174-pound match. The two wrestlers were scoreless through the first, and Springsteen chose top to begin the second. Mewes battled for position and grabbed the first points of the match on a reversal. He was awarded a penalty point and led 3-1 heading into the final two minutes of action. Mewes chose bottom and quickly went to work, grabbing his second reversal of the match and a 5-1 lead. The score stood through the remainder of the match, and Mewes first win of the season gave Northern the 16-9 lead.
 
The Wolves lone senior was up next, facing off against Lance Jarrett. Ninth ranked Kaden Campbell scored early and often taking a 10-0 lead through the first period. The two were neutral to begin the second, and Campbell continued his onslaught of scoring with his second takedown and third 4-point nearfall of the match. The back points secured the 17-0 technical fall win for Campbell, and lengthened the Northern State lead to 21-9 with two matches remaining.
 
Diego Gallegos sealed the match victory for the Wolves in the 197-pound bout. The sophomore fell behind in the first, but battled back through the second and third defeating Ryan Stottler 9-4. Gallegos notched three takedowns and two escapes in the win, as well as one point of riding time.
 
The Wolves return to the mat Thursday evening on the road at Dickinson State. Match start is set for 7 p.m. in the non-conference dual.
