Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. – In their second and final doubleheader day pf spring training, the Northern State University baseball team split with the University of Winnipeg and Southwest Minnesota State. The Wolves defeated the Wesmen 23-3 prior to falling to the Mustangs 3-1 in non-conference action. Northern now sits at 4-3 overall with two games remaining from Arizona.
In the game one win against the Wesmen, the Wolves tallied 23 runs on 21 hits with just one error. A total of six Wolves recorded multiple hits in the game, with another seven notching one.
Zach Beatty led the Northern offense going 3-for-3, with a run scored and four RBI. He was followed by
Hayden Houts,
Mikey Barreneche,
Tyler Gripentrog,
Seth Sullwold, and
Mike Severson with two hits each. Rounding out the team total with a hit apiece was
Jordan Goracke,
Ben Allen,
Lucas Lorenz,
Jack Schmidt,
Tyler Hair,
Chris Gonzales,
Jordan Malainey, and
Ben Carolin.
Gripentrog, Sullwold, and Schmidt were second on the team with three RBIs each, while Houts added two of his own. The Wolves hit .600 as a team, while holding the Wesmen to a .286 average on defense.
Thomas Sertic earned the win for the Wolves starting on the hill. Offensively the Wolves scored six runs in the first, two runs in the fourth, nine runs in the fifth, and three runs in both the sixth and the seventh to secure the mercy rule victory in seven innings.
In the game two loss to the Mustangs, the Wolves fell after giving up three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The two teams were scoreless through the first five complete, however the Wolves took the lead in the sixth.
Jack Schmidt led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third two batters later, as
Seth Sullwold doubled. Schmidt came around to score on the next at bat as
Ben Allen singled to right field
Louie Carlos suffered his first loss of the season throwing 7.2 innings for the Wolves. Carlos gave up three earned runs on six hits and struck out three in the loss.
Isaiah Greene entered in relief to close out the eighth, notching his third strikeout of the season.
Offensively Allen led the team going 3-for-4 with the lone RBI, and one of two extra base hits. Sullwold was second on the team going 2-for-4 with a double. Barreneche was the final Wolf to record a hit in the game, as Northern combined for six as a unit. The Wolves had their opportunities as eight runners were left on base, including four via Mustang walks.
The Wolves will be back in action tomorrow from Tucson with their second game versus Malone University. First pitch between the Wolves and Pioneers is set for 4 p.m. from the Kino Sports Complex.
