Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team dropped a pair of games in their home opener to St. Cloud State. With the losses the Wolves move to 8-10 overall this season and 1-5 in league action.
The Northern State offense struggled to get things going in game one as they fell to the Huskies 7-0. The Wolves notched just three hits in the game led by
Tyler Gripentrog who went 2-for-2.
Tyler Hair notched the team's final hit going 1-for-2.
Nick Hoffard started on the mound, suffering his third loss of the season. Hoffard threw 3.1 innings giving up seven runs and nine hits.
Nate Zeise entered in relief and held the Huskies scoreless through the final three and two thirds. The junior did not give up a hit, with just one runner reaching base on a walk.
The Wolves scored first in game two with one run in the bottom of the third innings.
Ben Carolin tallied a 2-out single up the middle, kick starting the NSU rally.
Jack Schmidt doubled down the right field line, scoring Carolin on the play as the Wolves took the 1-0 lead. The Huskies however tied things up in the sixth and took the lead in the eighth with six runs on four hits and three Northern State errors. The Wolves added a run in the eighth of the bat of
Ashton Williamson, however it was not enough to overcome the 6-run deficit. SCSU added two more in the ninth and held the Wolves scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to seal the victory.
Carolin and Schmidt led the team in game two, both going 2-for-3 at the plate. The pair each tallied a run scored, while Schmidt notched an RBI and two doubles. Gripentrog, Williamson, and
Ben Allen rounded out the team with a hit apiece.
Sam Krapf started for the Wolves and held the Huskies at bay, throwing five complete innings while giving up just one earned run on five hits. Krapf led the team with three strikeouts and gave up just one walk.
Rylan Shimer entered in relief and suffered his third loss of the season with six runs in two innings of work.
Kris Johnson closed out the final two innings for the Wolves giving up two runs on two hits.
Northern will resume league play this weekend with a 4-game series versus Augustana University at home. The Wolves and Vikings will face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday in a pair of doubleheaders.
