Wolves Fall to Augustana in Saturday Twin Bill

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team opened up their 4-game weekend series with Augustana University, falling to the Vikings 11-0 and 1-0 from Fossum Field. With the losses the Wolves drop to 8-12 overall and 1-7 in league play.

The Northern State offense struggled to get things going in game one against the Vikings starter, Jacob Blank who entered the game with a 5-0 record and only three runs given up this season, none of which were earned. The Wolves notched just three hits total, two off Blank and one off AU reliever Austin Orvis.

Jack Schmidt led the team going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Junior Seth Sullwold tallied the final team hit of the game, going 1-for-2. The Wolves left eight runners on base, as Blank gave up six walks through the first five innings of play.

Thomas Sertic started for the Wolves throwing four complete innings in his first loss of the season. Sertic gave up eight runs, seven earned, on ten hits. Colton Landreth and Lucas Heiser entered in relief throwing the final three innings with a combined three runs on five hits given up.

Game two of the say was scoreless through the first six innings, in large part to the starters on both teams. Nick Hoffard threw 7.2 innings for the Wolves, and despite his fourth loss of the season kept the Wolves in the game throughout. The senior gave up just one earned run on a homerun in the top of the seventh. The Vikings tallied just four hits off Hoffard, as he notched five strikeouts in the game. Nate Zeise and Isaiah Greene entered in relief holding Augustana scoreless with just one hit.

The Wolves had their opportunities leaving 12 runners on base in the loss, including two bases loaded chances. Ben Carolin led the team going 2-for-4, while Ben Allen, Seth Sullwold, Jordan Malainey, and Easton Lopez notched a hit apiece.

In their final three outs of the game, Northern threatened with runners on first and second with two outs. Schmidt stepped to the plate and laid into a pitch coming up short of the outfield wall as the Augustana left fielder caught the ball at the warning track.

Northern returns to the diamond tomorrow with a pair of games beginning at 12 p.m. versus the Vikings.
