Softball Travels South for National Training Center Spring Games

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team will pick up nonconference play with a series of double-headers from the National Training Center Spring games. The Wolves will play 14 games against 13 different Division II opponents from the Sunshine State. NSU is currently 3-1 in the 2017 season, with victories over Minnesota Crookston, Dakota State and Valley City State.

After dropping their first game 6-2 versus Southwest Minnesota State from the Presentation College Dome, Northern rallied back in their final three games of the weekend to set the pace for the start of their spring training trip.

Early in the year, the Wolves are batting .391 as a team with an average of 7.3 runs per game. The Northern State offense has combined for 43 hits, including six homeruns and six doubles. On the defensive end NSU has remained solid with a fielding percentage of .973.

From the plate, Katie Dawson leads the team with a batting average of .667, tallying four hits in six at bats and knocking in three runs. Freshman Madison Rutter has a team-high six hits, followed by sophomore Jenna Helgeson with five hits and five RBIs.  

The Wolves pitching staff has held opponents to a batting average of .209 with an earned run average of 2.62. With two starts from the mound, Jamie Fisher has collected two complete game shutouts for the Wolves. Fisher has allowed just seven hits with 11 strikeouts.

The first double-header of the NTC Spring Games will begin on Friday, March 3rd. First pitch takes place at 8 a.m. from Hancock Park against Kentucky Wesleyan College, followed by Lake Erie College at 10 a.m. for contest two.
