Liberty, Mo. – In the series finale with William Jewell College, the Northern State University baseball team fell 10-5. The Wolves however took the 2-1 series win, as they move to 7-5 overall this season heading into NSIC play.
Northern quickly was in the hole 8-0 after giving up two runs in the first and another six in the second inning. The Wolves battled back in the third and fourth with five runs, however it was not enough to gain the lead as the Cardinals added some insurance in the eighth.
Ben Allen led the NSU offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game. Four other Wolves tallied a hit apiece, as Northern notched five runs on six hits in the loss.
Chris Gonzales and
Zach Beatty each notched a single, while
Lucas Lorenz tallied his sixth double of the season.
Jack Schmidt led the team with two walks and three RBI after blasting his first homerun of the season to left field.
Rylan Shimer started for the Wolves throwing just 1.2 innings after giving up six earned runs on five hits.
Luke Chevalier entered in relief throwing the middle innings of the game with a team leading three strikeouts. In 5.1 innings of work, Chevalier gave up three earned runs on eight hits.
Isaiah Greene and
Kris Johnson entered throwing the remainder of the eighth innings, while holding the Cardinals scoreless.
The Wolves will open the 2017 NSIC slate next Saturday and Sunday on the road at Upper Iowa University. First pitch is schedule for 12 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders each day.
