Wolves Split with Peacocks in NSIC Opener

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Northern State baseball opened NSIC play on Saturday evening with a road spilt against Upper Iowa University. The Wolves move to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in league action following the doubleheader.
 
The Wolves dropped game one to the Peacocks with a score of 5-2, despite taking the lead in the top off the first. Ben Allen singled, scoring Jordan Malainey who had walked on the second at-bat of the inning. Upper Iowa took the 5-1 lead in the game, however the Wolves added one more run in the seventh. Lucas Lorenz led off the inning with a single, and game around to score Ben Carolin's ground ball to first base.
 
Allen led the team with two hits in the game. The senior went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Mikey Barreneche, Malainey, and Lorenz tallied the final three hits for the team offensively. Nick Hoffard started on the mound for the Wolves and suffered the loss after throwing 5.2 innings. The senior gave up five earned runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts. Andrew Nichols entered and threw the final out of the sixth for the Wolves.
 
The Wolves quickly bounced back in game two, taking the 8-inning 11-1 victory. Northern Scored first with four runs in the top of the third, and added another in the top of the fourth. The Wolves extended their lead in the sixth with five more runs and sealed the run rule victory in the eighth with one.
 
Freshman Ben Carolin led the team on offensive going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI. He was followed by Jack Schmidt, Lucas Lorenz, and Zach Beatty with two hits apiece. Lorenz notched the team's lone extra base hit in dramatic fashion, blasting a grand slam to left center which gave the Wolves the 4-0 lead. The Wolves combined for 13 hits and ten RBI in the win. Notching the final hits of the game were Jordan Malainey, Ashton Williamson, Mikey Barreneche, and Seth Sullwold.
 
Thomas Sertic started on the bump for the Wolves and earned his third win of the season. Sertic threw 5.1 innings for the Wolves with five strikeouts and five Peacock hits. Isaiah Greene entered in relief throwing the final 2.2 innings of action. Greene notched four strikeouts and gave up just two hits in the outing.
 
The Wolves will return to action tomorrow beginning at 5 p.m. to close out the weekend series with the Peacocks from Ronken Field.
