Seventh Inning Rally Not Enough in Loss to Pioneers

Tucson, Ariz. – The Northern State University baseball team dropped their second contest to Malone this season with a score of 18-3. With the loss the Wolves drop to 4-4 overall with just one game remaining from Tucson.

Despite an 18 run deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh the Wolves rallied for three runs in an attempt to avoid the mercy rule loss. Northern however was unable to keep the rally going and force the final innings of play. As a team the Wolves knocked out 12 hits, with three players notching multiple in the game.

Tyler Gripentrog led the Wolves offense going 2-for-2 with a walk. Also notching multiple hits were Lucas Lorenz and Jack Schmidt who went 2-for-3. Lorenz tallied one of the team's three RBI's alongside Mike Severson and Tyler Hair. Six Wolves tallied one hit in the game including Mikey Barreneche, Easton Lopez, Ben Carolin, Severson, Jordan Goracke, and Hayden Houts. Houts tallied the team's only extra base hit, a double to lead off the seventh.

Rylan Shimer started on the bump for the Wolves, suffering his first loss of the season. Shimer threw 3.1 innings giving up five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Andrew Nichols, Colton Landreth, Chase Tunstall, and Brock Ragatz entered in relief for NSU. Ragatz was the only NSU pitcher on the day to hold the Pioneers scoreless through the top of the seventh. The sophomore tallied one strikeout and did not give up a hit.

Northern will match-up with Oklahoma Panhandle tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. (CT) from the Kino Sports Complex.
