Wayne, Neb. – The Northern State University men's basketball team came away with the 76-66 victory over Wayne State on Friday night, kicking off their second weekend of cross divisional play. The Wolves improved to 12-5 overall and 8-3 in league action with the win.
Logan Doyle continued to shine for the Wolves in his starting role, leading the team with 23 points. The junior shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line, while notching his sixth double-double of the season with a team leading 12 rebounds. Doyle was also solid on defense with nine boards and a career single game high five blocks.
DJ Pollard also tallied double figures with a team second best 14 points. He added eight rebounds and two steals in the win.
Northern shot 48.9 percent from the floor, 41.2 percent from the arc, and 78.1 percent from the foul line in the game. Defensively they held the Wildcats to a 32.3 field goal percentage and 30.4 3-point percentage. NSU also tallied 28 points in the paint, 18 points off the bench, 12 second chance points, and 11 points off turnovers. The Wolves out-rebounded the Wildcats 43-32 in the game and racked up nine blocks as a team.
Freshman
Gabe King made the first start of his career notching eight points and six rebounds.
Carter Evans also tallied eight points off the bench for the Wolves. Starters
Mack Arvidson and
Bo Fries added seven a six points respectively, and each tallied a team leading three assists.
Cole Dahl saw increased minutes for the Wolves with six points, followed by
Jonny Dahl and
Brayden McNeary with two points each.
The two teams traded the lead two times in the contest, however the Wolves held the lead a majority of the game with their largest of 14 points coming at the ten minute mark in the second half. A total of 26 Wildcat fouls resulted in 25 points from the free throw line for the NSU in the game, making what could have been the difference.
Northern will return to action tomorrow from Sioux Falls versus Augustana University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from the Sioux Falls Arena in the ESPN Game of the Week which will be streamed on the WatchESPN App and ESPN3. View information for the game can be found below.
