Winona, Minn. – In their second road game of the 2016 season, the Northern State University football team fell to Winona State University 26-7. The Wolves drop to 1-2 overall, with both losses coming on the road this season.
 
The Warriors opened the game, taking a quick 23-0 lead in the first half of play. WSU added a field goal in the third to finish their scoring for the day, however it was enough to seal the victory. Northern answered in the fourth with their first and only touchdown of the game, a seven yard run by redshirt freshman quarterback Kyle Lavand.
 
Northern struggled on offense, tallying just 101 yards rushing and 92 yards passing, while Winona combined for 131 rushing and 332 yards passing. The Wolves suffered their first of two interceptions against the Warrior defense, and completed just under 40 percent of their passes.
 
Kyle Lavand appeared in his first game of the season, running for a touchdown and complete 6-of-11 passes for 24 yards. Chaka Kelly led the Northern rushers with 29 yards in the game, while Nicholas Truen and Kyle Lavand were close behind with 28 and 25 yards respectively. Zech Culbreath led the receivers with 46 yards on seven receptions and an 18 yard long.
 
The NSU defense worked to hold the Wolves in the game, led by senior Channing Barber with 11 tackles. Barber matched his mark from a weekend ago and added a tackle for a loss of two yards and a pass breakup. Chad Stoterau followed with eight tackles, including two sacks for a total loss of seven yards. A total of 14 players recorded multiple tackles in the game. Tyson Zemlicka added the team's third sack for a loss of 11, while Matt Thorson notched the lone interception.
 
Jacob Wiedrich punted for 318 yards in the game, averaging 39.8 yards per kick with a long of 52 yards. Wiedrich also knocked down the PAT, his first of the year, after the Lavand score. Both Wiedrich and Nathan Shaw tallied a kickoff in the game, with Shaw tallying the game long of 56 yards.
 
The Wolves will return home next weekend as they face Concordia-St. Paul in the Fall Classic. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Swisher Field on the 24^th.
