Pre NSU: McAlvain was a First Team All-Bay Six selection his final season at Satna Rosa Junior College. McAlvain passed for 2,792 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2014 while also rushing for nearly 300 yards and six scores while leading the Bearcubs to a bowl game appearance.
