Wolves Bounce Back to Record Second Game Victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team tallied their third split of the week from the NTC Spring Games today, falling to Stonehill College 0-4 in their first match-up and bouncing back to defeat Post University 7-0. The Wolves are now 7-7 overall in the 2016 season.

Game One- Stonehill College

The Wolves were slow to get their bats going in the first game of the day, being shut out by Stonehill pitcher Megan Ruonavaara.

Senior Kalie Maiden attempted to get create a scoring threat in the top of the first, ripping a single to center field and stealing second base the following batter, however, NSU hit into two groundouts to end the inning. Stonehill College retaliated in the bottom of the first, notching a run off of a walk and two base hits.

Stonehill added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when infielder Katherine Melanson got ahold of an inside pitch and hit a three-run homerun down the left field line to put the Skyhawks up 4-0.

The score would stay locked in at 0-4 as both teams were unable to push runners across the plate for the remaining five innings. Northern State collected three team hits in 25 at bats, coming from Kalie Maiden, Katie Dawson and Katelynn Dilts.

Junior Missy Elkins recorded the loss for the Wolves, falling to 4-3 on the year. Elkins allowed nine hits, four earned runs and just one walk in seven complete innings.

Game Two- Post University

Northern State bounced back in their second contest of the day, defeating Post University 7-0. The Wolves jumped on the Eagles in the top of the first inning as Kelsey Gale led off with a single to left field. Kalie Maiden followed by beating out a grounder to third base placing runners on first and second. The two speedy seniors then pulled off a double steal to put themselves in scoring position for Katie Dawson. Dawson laid down a bunt to score Kelsey Gale for the first run of the game.

Up 1-0, NSU continued to stay aggressive on the base paths, stealing once again with runners on first and third. Katie Dawson's flex runner, Lauren Kunz, beat out the tag at second as Kalie Maiden crossed the plate for the Wolves' second run. Jamie Fisher continued the rally by hitting an RBI single to center field, which would eventually mark the final run of the inning for Northern State.

With the 3-0 advantage, Jess Vernon started it again in the top fourth with a single up the middle. Sophomore Mackenzie Thielen advanced Vernon to second with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Kelsey Gale drilled a single up the middle to put runners on first and third. Kalie Maiden hit a fielder's choice to second to score Jess Vernon and put NSU up 4-0.

Freshman Jamie Fisher continued to pitch solid through the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Wolves a chance to collect some insurance runs in the top of the fifth. Both Katelynn Dilts and Jamie Fisher reached base for Northern State as senior Macey Engel was due up. Engel blasted a three-run shot to left center for her second homerun of the season.

As a team, NSU compiled seven total hits. Kelsey Gale, Katelynn Dilts and Jess Vernon all led the Wolves from the plate with two hits each.

Jamie Fisher tossed a shutout from the mound, making it her second of the season. The freshman held the Eagles to six hits in seven innings, notching seven strikeouts in the process. Fisher improves to 2-3 in the 2016 season.

Northern State will continue play from the Sunshine State tomorrow at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. against California University of PA and Assumption College.
