Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla. – The Northern State University softball team tallied another split in their midday double-header from the NTC Spring Games. The Wolves dropped a close 0-2 match to No. 4 California University of PA in their first game, and went on to defeat Assumption College 3-1 in their final contest of the day. California University of PA extends their record to 12-1, while Assumption Colllege falls to 2-6 overall. NSU now holds an overall record of 8-8 in the 2016 season.
Game One – California University of PAFacing the Vulcans for the second time this week, Northern State was forced into a 1-2-3 top of the first inning as the away team. California University of PA responded in the bottom of the inning by hitting a one-out double to left field. The next two batters reached on a walk and an error to account for the first run of the game. Jacquelyn Fowler of the Vulcans was due up next and ripped a single up the middle to add another run for California University of PA.
The 2-0 Vulcan lead would sit for the remainder of the game as both teams were unable to cross the plate for additional runs. Freshman
Jamie Fisher led the Wolves offensively as she collected both of NSU's base hits in the game, going 2-2. The Wolves forced three walks, and left five total runners on base through seven innings.
Junior
Missy Elkins pitched a strong game for NSU, holding the Vulcans to one earned run in just five hits and two walks. Elkins is now an even 4-4 from the mound, while improving her ERA to 2.84.
Game Two – Assumption College Northern State finally got the bats going in the third inning of their second game as senior
Macey Engel led off the inning with a homerun to left field, marking her second in two days. With two outs,
Kelsey Gale attempted to keep the offensive attack alive with a base hit to left field, followed by a stolen base.
Kalie Maiden singled to the shortstop and advanced on an overthrow, placing runners on second and third, however, the Wolves were unable to plate the two seniors and headed into the bottom of the inning with the 1-0 advantage.
Freshman
Jamie Fisher held the Greyhounds to just two hits through six innings pitched, when the Wolves looked to add some insurance runs in the top of the inning.
Brittney Lash started the seventh inning rally by taking a pitch to the shoulder, as
Katelynn Dilts followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. Sophomore
Michaela Liebl drilled a single to left center to load the bases for NSU. With two outs senior
Kelsey Gale approached the plate and connected for a single to right field, scoring both
Brittney Lash and
Katelynn Dilts.
The Greyhounds came up with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, and then put two runners on off of a single up the middle and a walk, however,
Jamie Fisher forced a groundout to the third base to seal the 3-1 Northern State victory.
The Wolves compiled seven hits in 26 at bats against Assumption College.
Macey Engel hit her third homerun of the season, notching the first RBI of the game for the Wolves.
Kelsey Gale led NSU offensively, going 3-4 with two RBIs.
Kalie Maiden and
Katelynn Dilts accounted for the other two base hits in the match.
Jamie Fisher did not allow a single earned run in seven complete innings pitched. The freshman racked up five strikeouts and held the Greyhounds to just three hits. Fisher improves to 3-3 overall with an ERA of 1.74.
