Game Day PosterAberdeen, S.D. - Northern State University football looks to bounch back in week two as they host the No. 1 Mavericks of Minnesota State. The Wolves home opener is schedule for Saturday at 6 p.m. from the confines of Swisher Field. Fans are encouraged to make their way to the south tailgate lot which opens at 3 p.m. from the complex. NSU suffered their first loss of 2015 to Upper Iowa in the opening week of play, 17-6 from Fayette.
Christian McAlvain led the Wolves with 75 yards passing and 53 yards rushing, while
Conner Doherty tallied 69 yards on seven receptions. Senior
Devin Olson led the NSU defense with 15 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss of 34 yards, and one forced fumble.
Adrian Krupka connected with two 40+ field goal attempts to put the Wolves on the board, however the NSU offense struggled to make things happen. The Northern defense also held UIU scoreless late in the third quarter, with the Peacocks on the goal line. The stop however was not enough, as Northern ultimately fell to Upper Iowa.
About the Mavericks • MSU is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation after a 20-17 victory over Minnesota Duluth in the season opener.
• 2015 marks Head Coach Todd Hoffner's sixth season with the Mavericks, where he has compiled a record of 48-14 with three NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008, 2009 and 2014.
• Minnesota State returns several key players from a season ago, where they made the NCAA Championship game, including quarterbacks Ricky Lloyd and Nick Pieruccini and All-Americans Josh Gordon and Tyler Henderson.
• The close score was deceptive, as Minnesota State racked up 380 yards of total offense to Minnesota Duluth's 257.
• The Mavericks came out a bit flat, trailing 17-3 heading into halftime. MSU knocked off the dust and scored in their opening drive of the second half.
?Last Match-Up • The Wolves and the Mavericks last faced off in the fall of 2013. Minnesota State took the game with a score of 42-14. Terrelle Walker caught a touchdown pass for Northern's first score of the game. A Season Ago • The Wolves went 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC North Division in 2014. The Mavericks went 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC South Division, ultimately falling in the National Championship in 2014.

• Wayne State blew past Minnesota, Crookston with a week one game score of 58-16.
• Sioux Falls defeated U-Mary 55-7 at home in week 1.
• Minnesota State remains No.1 in the nation after a 20-17 victory over former No. 3 Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs fell to No. 9 overall after the loss.
• MSU Moorhead won its first game from Scheels Field, versus Winona State 42-7.
• Wayne State leads the league in scoring offense, rushing offense, rushing defense, and total offense after week 1.
