Softball Heads into Final Week of NSIC Regular Season

Aberdeen, S.D. – Six games are slated this week for the Northern State University softball team. The Wolves will play their final home games of the season this Tuesday at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. versus the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth. Northern will then hit the road for a pair of doubleheader match-ups with Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
 
The Wolves enter the final week of NSIC regular season play with a fourth place standing in the league. Northern is 28-18 overall and 15-8 in conference games. A week ago, NSU went 5-2 versus U-Mary, MSU Moorhead, Winona State, and Upper Iowa. Head coach Kristi Villar recorded her 100th career victory in the Wolves 1-0 extra innings win over Winona State. NSU recorded a sweep over MSU Moorhead, while taking one game from the Maraduers, Warriors, and Peacocks.
 
Rachel Albright and Eryn Yancy led the team in average with marks of .331 and .329 respectively. Yancy has tallied a team leading 46 hits, 14 doubles, eight homeruns, and 32 runs batted in. As a team the Wolves are hitting .269 this season with 27 homeruns and 318 hits. Kami Smesmo has tallied 18 wins this season for NSU with a 2.76 ERA. The senior leads the team with 107 strikeouts, six shutouts, and two saves this season. Missy Elkins sits with a 4.11 ERA throwing nine wins, three shutouts and 60 strikeouts.
 
About Minnesota Duluth
 
The Bulldogs currently sit ninth in the league with a 27-18 record overall and 11-11 mark in Northern Sun play. Hanna Schmoll leads five UMD players hitting above .300 with a .397 mark this season. She leads the team with 62 hits and 38 runs scored. Becky Smith is second on the team in average, at .366, and leads the Bulldogs with 50 runs batted in and 18 doubles. Jordan Rice has tallied 12 homeruns this season, while hitting .352 on the year. Cayli Sadler leads the UMD pitching staff with 15 wins and a 2.82 ERA. Sam Hartmann has tallied 12 wins of her own, while bolstering a team leading 140 strikeouts. Duluth is hitting .308 as a team, while holding their opponents to a .242 average.
 
About Minnesota Crookston
 
The Golden Eagles are last in the NSIC with only four wins, none of which coming in conference play. Victoria Bayliss and Ashley Hoyle lead the team in average with marks of .353 and .333 respectively. As a team, UMC is hitting .253 on the year, while their opponents sit at .377. The UMC pitching staff houses five student-athletes combining for a 6.97 ERA in 42 games played.
 
About Bemidji State
 
The Beavers enter the week 14th in the Northern Sun, with a 17-23 record overall and 8-16 record in league games. Lyndsey Peterson leads Bemidji's four hitters above a .300 average with a .395 mark this season. She has tallied a team leading nine homeruns, 13 doubles, 27 RBI and a slugging percentage of .734. Angie Roberts is second on the team with a .365 average and 50 hits this season. Jessica Yost is atop the Beaver pitching staff with a 3.14 ERA and 11 wins in 2015. She has tallied 156 strikeouts in 129.1 innings pitched.
