UIU VideoAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team is set for a busy week in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wolves will begin the week on the road at U-Mary, Tuesday. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m. versus the Marauders. Northern will then return home for their re-scheduled match-up with MSU Moorhead. First pitch with the Wolves and Dragons is scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday from Moccasin Creek. NSU then caps off the week with home games Saturday and Sunday versus Winona State and Upper Iowa. Game times for each day are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. between the teams. NSU Softball will celebrate senior day, Sunday versus the Peacocks.
The Northern State University softball team went 5-1 in Northern Sun Conference play a week ago. The Wolves recorded sweeps of Minot State and Concordia-St. Paul, and split with Minnesota State. With the five win week, the Wolves are one win away from tying the school single season record for wins set back in 2012. Northern defeated Minot State 3-1 and 4-3 at home in mid-week play, before traveling to Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. Game scores versus the Mavericks were a 3-0 victory and 0-8 loss in five innings. NSU capped off the weekend with 8-0 and 11-7 wins over the Golden Bears.
Kami Smesmo was named both the NSU Qdoba Athlete of the week and the NSIC Pitcher of the Week. The Wolves currently sit fifth in the league with a 10-6 conference record and 23-16 overall record.
About U-Mary The Marauders enter the week with a 24-17 record overall and 8-9 record in league play. Alana Norman leads the team with a .463 average and 69 hits this season. Taylor Mendez has been hot for the Marauders with a team leading 37 RBI and nine homeruns. Both Mendez and Kristin Ormsby boast a .336 average in 43 games played. As a team, five U-Mary athletes are hitting above .300 on the year, with a team mark of .310. The Marauders are second in the league with 37 stolen bases in conference games, and 132 stolen bases overall. Nena Dudley leads the Mary pitching staff with 15 wins in 167.1 innings pitched. Dudley has tallied 170 strikeouts this season with a 4.57 ERA.
About MSU Moorhead The Dragons enter the week with an 11-19 record overall and 1-15 record in conference play. Kristina Villalobos sits atop the team with a .368 average. Offensively, five MSUM athletes are batting above .300 on the year. Brittany York has started all 30 games for the Dragons, with a team leading 32 hits, 22 RBI, five homeruns, and a .337 average. Moorhead is hitting .277 on the year, while their opponents tally a .344 average. Morgan Nybo leads the team with nine wins the season and a 4.65 ERA. Nybo has thrown 113.0 of the teams 186.2 innings this season.
About Winona StateThe Warriors are second in the league with a 33-8 record overall and 15-1 record in NSIC play. Ashley Walker and Reed Karsten are first and second on the team in average with .394 and .379 marks respectively. Walker has recorded a team leading 54 hits and 18 doubles, while Karsten is second on the team with 53 hits and 17 doubles. Morgan Lintz has tallied six homeruns and 39 RBI this season, as the Warriors have five women hitting above .300. Winona is hitting .315 as a team this season and second in the league in slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored, runs batted in, doubles, triples, and walks. Hann Lythberg and Ashley Walker are a one-two threat for WSU, with 16 and 15 wins respectively on the year. Erica Kirgan leads the team with seven homeruns, while Whitney Williams Lauren Marlinghaus have tallied a team leading seven doubles. Flood is not only a force at the plate, but leads the team with nine wins on the mound. She holds a 3.65 ERA this season, with two shutouts and one save. Brooke Redmond holds a team best 69 strikeouts this season, with five wins.
