Wolves Home Opener Scheduled for Tuesday

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball will open the 2015 home season Tuesday from the Moccasin Creek Softball Complex. The Wolves are scheduled to match-up against St. Cloud State in an NSIC doubleheader. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m. between the two teams.
 
Northern enters the week on a five game win streak after a weekend sweep of Southwest Minnesota State and University of Sioux Falls. The Wolves are 17-10 on the year and 4-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. NSU belted out a season high 17 hits and 20 runs in their game one win over the Cougars. Both Smesmo and Elkins notched shutouts versus the Mustangs, as the Wolves out-scored their opponents 10-0 on the day. NSU combined for 35 runs and 44 hits in the four games.
 
Eryn Yancy continues to lead the team offensively with a .325 average, 27 hits, 21 RBI, and seven homeruns this season. The senior is also slugging a solid .687 on the year. Rachel Albright is second on the team in average at .312 in 27 games played. Kelsey Gale has scored 18 runs this season, and is coming off a hot weekend at the plate. The junior hit .438 with seven runs scored, eight RBI, and her first career grand-slam. Offensively the Wolves are hitting .270 this season as a whole with 190 hits. Kami Smesmo is heading the Northern pitching staff with 11 wins and a 2.73 ERA. The senior has made 16 appearances this season, tallying two shutouts and 60 strikeouts. Missy Elkins comes in next with five wins, a 4.22 ERA, and 32 strikeouts.
 
The Huskies are 18-12 on the year and 4-2 in NSIC conference play. St. Cloud State's four conference wins have come against Minnesota Duluth, Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State. Five Huskies are hitting over .300 on the year, led by Jessica Goerger with a .409 average this season. Goerger also sits atop the team with 38 hits and nine doubles this season. Alyssa Coletto leads SCSU with four homeruns and 24 RBI. As a team, St. Cloud is hitting .291 on the year, while holding their opponents to a .273 average on the mound. Kelly Franks leads the team with a 2.60 ERA, 77 strikeouts, and seven wins in 15 appearances. Megan Hedstrom and Senna Francesconi have tallied six and five wins respectively. The trio have each made 15 appearances this season.
