The No. 21 Northern State volleyball team got off to a hot start to begin its 2014 campaign as the Wolves opened day one at the Nebraska-Kearney New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Fall Classic with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over South Dakota Mines and Newman.
NSU bested Mines 25-12, 25-17 and 25-21 in the day's opening match and closed the day over Newman with scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-11.
Against South Dakota Mines, the Wolves used a balanced attack as they hit .358 as a team while holding the Hardrockers to just a .099 clip.
Kelsey Chambers led Northern in the first match with 14 kills while
Mandy Kurosky added nine in her NSU debut and
Hailey Busch and
Cari McGarvie each added eight while hitting .400 and .417, respectively. Busch also led the Wolves with 14 digs in the win.
Tori Biach chipped in with seven kills and also led the Wolves with a .538 attack percentage and four block assists.
Drew Smith had a solid match from her setter position as she recorded 43 assists.
Annika van Oosbree had a pair of assists, seven digs and an ace in her first career match with the Wolves.
Against the Jets, it was much of the same for the Wolves as they hit .340 as a team while Newman hit just .062. NSU hit at least .310 overall in all three sets.
McGarvie led the Wolves with 13 kills and three blocking assists in the second match while Chambers had 10 kills and Biach added eight while hitting .667. Busch added six kills while Kurosky had five and
Jussy Tuscherer had four.
Smith collected her first double-double of the season in the win as she once again recorded 43 assists and added 12 digs to go along with her team-high three service aces. van Oosbree and
Renee Hoffman had 13 and 11 digs, respectively for NSU.
Saturday, the Wolves will play a pair of matches, the first beginning in the afternoon at 2:30 against Western State Colorado. NSU will close the classic against ninth-ranked Nebraska Kearney at 7 p.m. Northern went 3-5 in matches against ranked opponents in 2013.
