The Northern State baseball team finished its final day of the regular season dropping a doubleheader to Southwest Minnesota State Sunday afternoon in Marshall, Minn. The Wolves fell in game one 8-0 and 3-2 in game two.

SMSU's Brandan Alfson held the Wolves (28-17, 21-13 NSIC) to just two hits in game one, both of which came from Matt Stubbs who went 2-for-3 in the game. Alfson recorded four strikeouts and had no walks in the complete game shutout.

Phil Sauer got the loss for the Wolves after he pitched four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits in the game. Dillon Lee pitched two innings of relief for Northern in the contest.

In game two, the Wolves got on the board first when Riley Shintaffer walked with the bases loaded to score Clayton Nutting. However, Southwest would score the next three runs and took a 3-1 lead. NSU brought across one more run in the seventh on an Alex Cornwell RBI but that was all the offense NSU could muster the rest of the way.

Shintaffer went 2-for-4 in the loss while Eric O' Bryan went 3-of-5. Nutting scored both runs in game two. NSU used four pitchers in the game two loss. Kris Keating got the start and pitched three innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Adam Thompson, Cody Johns and Andrew Crisman all had relief appearances for the Wolves.

Next up, Northern begins the NSIC Tournament Wednesday down in Sioux Falls. The Wolves will be the sixth seed in the tournament and will face No. 3-seeded St. Cloud State at 3 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Wolves won their only meeting with St. Cloud earlier this season, 8-5 down in Arizona.
