Box Score 2 Clayton Nutting scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning and drove-in the Wolves' other run to help lead the Northern State baseball team to a 2-1 win in game two Wednesday over the University of Sioux Falls. The Wolves dropped game one, 3-1 to the Cougars to split the day.
Cody Vandever pitched a gem in the victory as he went eight-plus innings, allowing just five hits and one unearned run while striking-out seven Cougars in the game to move to 2-2 on the season.
Dillon Lee came on in relief and pitched a perfect ninth inning to collect his second save of the season.
Trevor Sporrer, along with Nutting went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
NSU (10-10, 4-6 NSIC) got on the board first in game two as Nutting doubled to center field to score
Eric O' Bryan in the third inning, an inning in which the Wolves collected four hits. USF (13-10, 7-3 NSIC) tied the game in the sixth when Noah Durkin scored after reaching base via error earlier in the inning. Matt Stubbs fly out before scoring on the wild pitch the next batter.
Lee induced a fly-out and ground-out in the ninth and
Buddy Traxler caught USF's Jeremy Varner stealing to close the door on the Cougars' bid for a rally.
Eric Brothers and Derek Fischer allowed just three hits for the Cougars in game one and allowed one unearned in the victory.
Robbie Rocamora, Traxler and
Derek Tymesen collected the only hits for the Wolves in the loss.
John Eckstein got the start on the hill in game one for the Wolves and had a solid outing in the loss. Eckstein allowed three runs (one earned) and four hits while striking-out four and walking just one in 4.1 innings of work.
Adam Thompson pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck-out three USF batters.
Northern continues action this weekend as the Wolves play their first "home" games of the season when NSU and Minnesota, Crookston travel to South Sioux City, Neb., for a four-game series being played Saturday and Sunday. The games were moved south due to field conditions at Fossum Field. Northern will be the home team for all four games.
