The Northern State baseball team's win streak was snapped at 10 games Friday as the Wolves lost a pair of games to No. 8 ranked Minnesota State at Fossum Field. NSU fell in game one 6-2 and in game two 6-1.

The Mavericks (32-7, 20-4 NSIC) jumped on NSU early in game one, scoring five runs in the first two innings to take a comfortable lead. From there on, the Wolves would settle in, thanks in large part to the relief pitching of Phil Sauer. Sauer 4.2 innings for the Wolves out of the bullpen and allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out four batters. Sauer came on in relief of starter John Eckstein who was saddled with the loss.

Northern (19-12, 12-8 NSIC) was able to get on the board in the fourth inning with a Trevor Sporrer sacrifice fly that scored Eric O' Bryan. In the sixth, Alex Cornwell brought home Matt Stubbs to make the score 6-2, but that was as close as the Wolves would get in game one. Both O'Bryan and Stubbs got multiple hits in the loss for the Wolves. Jason Hoppe pitched a complete game in the win for the Mavs, moving his record to 8-1 on the season.

Game two started off better for Northern as it got the first run of the game in the second inning off a Buddy Traxler RBI single up the middle. However, MSU would answer with three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead and wouldn't look back. The game was a 3-1 contest for much of the contest, before the Mavericks lengthened their edge with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth inning.

Cody Vandever pitched solidly for the Wolves in the loss. Vandever went eight innings and allowed three earned runs off nine hits. Vandever also struck out three while walking just one batter.

Robbie Rocamora had a nice game at the plate for NSU as he 3-for-4 and had the Wolves' lone run of the game. Traxler collected two hits in the contest.

Northern and Minnesota State finish its four-game set Saturday at Fossum Field with a second doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
