Live VideoAberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University softball team will remain at home this weekend as they take on Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston. Game times each day have been move up to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to allow for Minnesota State University Moorhead to play their games from Mocassin Creek Complex as well.
Coming into the weekend the Wolves are 9-25 overall and 2-16 in the Northern Sun. NSU looks to break into double-digit wins on the season with the four game series against the Beavers and Golden Eagles ahead.Earlier this week Northern fell to U-Mary in a home double header on Tuesday.
Lindsey Hubler hit her fifth home run of the season in game two, a blast against the wind right down the left field line.
Kami Smesmo threw 13 innings for NSU in the two games striking out 11 Marauders. Smesmo threw well keeping the Wolves in the game as she gave up two earned runs in each outing. The Wolves are led statistically on the season by junior
Eryn Yancy who boasts a .330 average on the year in 100 at bats.
Kelsey Gale is the only other Wolf currently above .300 in average at .304, with a team leading 21 runs scored.
Rachel Albright who is just below the .300 mark leads the team in home runs with seven on the year after breaking the single season school record just two short weeks ago. Albright leads the team in slugging percentage with a .532 mark. Smesmo leads the team in innings pitched on the year and has struck out 74 opposing batters. Northern will play the next two weekends of softball from home.
About Bemidji StateThe Beavers have had a rocky conference season in 2014, as they have been unable to come away with a win. BSU has recorded some close games with conference opponents this season, mostly recently being a one run loss to St. Cloud. The Beavers are led at the plate by Lyndsey Peterson with a .3-7 season average and four homeruns. Peterson is the only BSU player above the .300 mark on the year. The Bemidji pitching staff holds a combined 5.64 ERA in 32 total games on the year.
Last Season The two teams first match-up in the season opening games in 2013 with the Wolves coming out on top 3-1.
Kami Smesmo struck out 15 in the contest, a single game school record. The Wolves tallied seven hits in the win. Northern again took the double header sweep in conference play with scores of 5-0 and 11-5.
Macey Engel led Northern from the plate as she went 5-8 in the two games with a home run. Smemso again was a force on the mound throwing a complete game shut-out while striking out eight.
About Minnesota CrookstonThus far in 2014 the Golden Eagles have notched one conference win over St. Cloud State University. Their other two wins on the season came during thier spring break trip to Florida. Offensively as a team UMC holds a .209 batting average with no players above the .300 mark. Four players have notched two home runs on the season for Crookston. The Golden Eagles pitching staff is one of the largest in the league with six members recieving statistics. Paige Schaust and Brooke Vatthauer recieve a majority of the innings and starters for the squad.
Last Season The Wolves swept the Golden Eagles in 2013 with scores of 9-1 (5 innings) and 7-2.
Kelsey Gale was 3-6 from the plate in the two games with one run scored and two RBI.
Lindsey Hubler also notched two hits in game two, a home run and double to left. The Wolves are 7-1 against the Golden Eagles under head coach
Kristi Villar.
