Live StatsAberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University softball team will return home this week beginning with a Tuesday contest against University of Mary. The Marauders and Wolves will face-off with a double header beginning 2 p.m. from the Mocassin Creek Softball Complex. The Wolves will remain at home this weekend with match-ups against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
The Wolves started the weekend off right breaking their loss streak with a 9-4 win over the Upper Iowa Peacocks. As a team, Northern compiled 12 hits in the victory led by
Kelsey Gale who was 4-5 from the plate.
Macey Engel and
Eryn Yancy each notched two hits in the win, while
Lindsey Hubler drove out her third home run of the season. Hubler later added another long ball in the game two loss with the Peacocks.
Courtney Moore and
Katelynn Dilts each recorded their first career doubles in the first game of the day.
Kami Smesmo tallied her seventh win of the season in game one as she gave up four runs and struck out two UIU batters. The Wolves then traveled to Winona State for Saturday softball play. NSU fell to the Warriors in a two game sweep. In game two of the day, the Wolves scored first led off by
Kelsey Gale with a no out walk.
Eryn Yancy and
Rachel Albright hit back to back singles to load this bases with Engel stepping to the plate. Macey hit a RBI ground ball to short scoring Gale on the play for the first runs of the game.
Lindsey Hubler then stepped to the plate for a single to centerfield which plated two more runs for NSU. The Wolves however were unable to hold on and dropped the game two lead. Northern is not 9-23 on the year and 2-14 in the NSIC as the look to University of Mary in a mid-week match-up from Mocassin Creek Softball Complex.
About MaryThe Marauders are currently on a two game win streak after sweeping the Golden Bears on the road. Moving into the 2014 season U-Mary looked to fill three starting roles which had been lost from a season ago. The Marauders however returned six of their starting defense alongside their two top pitchers from 2013. As a team Mary is hitting well above .300 at .329 over 38 games. A total of seven Marauder hitters set above the .300 mark led by Allison Brown with a .422 average on the year. Brown along with Alana Norman have totaled 61 stolen bases on the year. The Marauders average 5.31 runs per game. Cherlyn Trujillo leds the pitching staff in ERA at 2.09 overall, with a season record of 9-6.
Last Season In 2013 the two teams did not play due to poor weather conditions across the upper midwest. Looking back to 2012, the Marauders and Wolves split in NSIC with game scores of 6-4 (NSU) and 2-3 (MARY).
