WSU Live VideoAberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University softball team will begin weekend NSIC play today from Fayette, Iowa as they take on the Peacocks of Upper Iowa. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m. between the two teams. The Wolves will then travel to take on the Warriors of Winona State with first pitch of the double header at noon on Saturday.
The Wolves dropped four games this weekend from home against Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State.
Eryn Yancy led the NSU offense as she was 5-13 in the four games with one RBI. Freshman
Rachel Albright broke the single season home run record in game one with the Golden Bears as she sent a shot to left field. Her seventh of the year, broke the record which was set back in 1985. The Wolves fell with scores of 1-3 and 2-3 to the Golden Bears, and 0-4 and 1-11 against the Mavericks. Northern then traveled to Minot State University to take on the Beavers in a mid-week double header. MSU took both games with scores of 8-0 and 6-4. Northern compiled five hits in game one, however were unable to notch a run.
Macey Engel led the Wolves attack with a single and a double to the left side. The other three NSU hits came off the bats of
Rachel Albright,
Eryn Yancy and
Lindsey Hubler. Engel added to her stellar day in game two going 3-4 from the plate, while crushing her second home run of the season to left center. Macey notched two singles, two runs scored and two RBI in the loss. Hubler connected for her second home run of the season with a long ball to left center in the top of the fifth. Hubler added two RBI in the inning, as well as a single in her first at bat.
About Upper IowaThe Peacocks are currently on a two game loss streak after falling to conference leading Minnesota State. Upper Iowa has returned two All-Conference performers this season in Whitney Williams and Tara Duran. The Peacocks are led by Flood with a .368 average with 21 hits on the year. The 2014 squad boasts four players above the .300 mark in average. Kirgan leads the team with seven home runs this season. Remond is 9-7 on the year from the circle with a 2.76 ERA. She has recorded 56 strikeouts in 88.2 innings pitched.
Last SeasonThe Wolves and Peacocks did not play each other last season due to poor weather conditions in both Aberdeen adn Fayette. In the 2012 spring season Northern swept Upper Iowa with scores of 11-8 and 3-0 from Fayette.
About Winona StateThe Warriors are 7-3 in the conference after a four game sweep of the Marauders and Golden Bears. Winona State lost only two seniors moving into the 2014 season after they were 36-14, with a NCAA super regional appearance in 2013. Seven Warriors sit above .300 in average on the year, while three have reached over the .400 mark. Morgan Lintz has started every game for the Warriors this season and boasts a .402 average with 37 hits adn 19 runs scored. Jenny Nelson has nearly reached double-digit home runs for the season, as she currently sits at nine. The Winona pitching staff has a combined 2.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts.
Last Season In 2013 the Warriors took two games from the Wolves with scores of 9-6 and 13-0. The crazy spring weather moved NSU's home games to Winona. The Warriors combined for 25 hits in the two wins, with three home runs. Northern notched 12 hits of their own however were unable to come up with the deciding runs in game one.
