Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University softball team will continue conference play this weekend at Wayne State and Augustana College. The Wolves are currently 8-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m. both day from Wayne, Neb. and Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Wolves are coming off a two game split with MSU Moorhead in the NSIC season opener. NSU ace Kami Smesmo (6-3) threw a complete game shutout against the Dragons, striking out a season high ten batters. Freshmen Rachel Albright brought her hit streak to 12 games, going 2-4 from the plate in game one, before she was shut down by MSUM starter Nordby. Eryn Yancy and Kelsey Gale each went 2-3 from the plate in game one, while Yancy added two RBI. Yancy and Gale each added another hit to their season totals in game two.

Northern was errorless for only the fourth time this season in game one, allowing only seven Dragons on base. Of the 93 runs scored against Northern this season, only 66 are earned. The Wolves are led offensively by Albright with a season average of .408, while leading the team in hits, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. Alongside Albright, Yancy and Gale sit with averages above three hundred and significant stats across the board. The three have started all 18 games for NSU this season. The key for Northern this weekend is to continue to be agressive from the plate and look to cut back in costly errors and unearned runs.

Wayne State

The WIldcats are coming off an exciting win from home against the Augustana Vikings. WSC is 15-9 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC after the weekday split. Kaiti Williams leads the Wildcat offense with a .403 average from the plate. Williams has also connected for two of the team's ten home runs this season. Wayne ace Kelcie Bormann boasts an 8-1 record with an ERA of 1.96.  Bormann has recorded 72 strikeouts this season.

Last Season

Wayne swept the Wolves last season from home, although they were the visiting team due to weather. Game one resulted in a 6-1 defeat of NSU, as the Wildcats combined for nine team hits. Macey Engel led the Wolves from the plate with three hits in three attempts. Engel added one more hit on the day, a double, in game two however it was not enough as Northern fell 1-9 in six innings. NSU compiled six team hits led by Kelsey Gale with two in the loss. Wolves starter Stephanie Horkey gave up six earned runs on 15 Wildcat hits.

Augustana College

The No. 11 Vikings are 18-5 this season and 1-1 in the NSIC after a weekday loss to Wayne State. Augie has been a member of the NFCA top 25 poll since the start of the 2014 season, with their highest ranking coming at No. 5 a week ago. Mackenzie Alstott leads the Vikings in average at .435, while Jordan Schaffer has tallied five home runs on the year.

Last Season

In 2013 the Wolves and Vikings split in NSIC play from Sioux Falls. Due to weather the games were moved to Souix Falls, however NSU held the home advantage. The Wolves fell in game one 1-3 against Trautmann on the mound. Trautmann allowed only one NSU hit and recorded two home runs of her own to lead the Vikings to victory. Game two landed in Northern's favor as senior Kelsey Robling came around to score in the bottom of the seventh inning. NSU recorded six team hits in the win.
