Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University softball team will now kick off the 2014 NSIC conference season from their home city. Due to poor weather conditions the Wolves and MSU Moorhead Dragons will face off from the home football turf at Presentation College in Aberdeen. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. from the Saints facility on the north side of town. Northern will still begin each game as the visiting team, although the sites have been changed.
NSU traveled this past week to Washburn University and Missouri Western Crossover Tournament. NSU finished the weekend 7-9 overall and 3-3 from the Missouri Western Crossover. After falling to Washburn previously in the week, the Wolves came back for a 9-6 victory from St. Joe.
Lauren Kunz,
Kelsey Gale,
Kalie Maiden, and
Rachel Albright connected for the first career home runs. Albright had a breakout weekend for NSU hitting two more HRs over the weekend.
Lindsey Hubler also notched her first of the season in the Tuesday match-up with the Ichabods. The Wolves tabbed wins against Missouri Western (3-2), Washburn (9-6), and Northwest Missouri State (8-1). Northern ace
Kami Smesmo added two wins to her season total and stuck out a season high seven batters against No. 12 Emporia State. Smesmo's season ERA currently sits at 2.70 on the year with 30 strikeouts. Gale leads the team with 11 runs scored, while Albright has compiled a team leading 28 bases and 11 RBI.
MSU Moorhead
Moorhead was picked to finish 14th in the preseason coaches poll and currently sits at 4-5 on the year. This year's squad returns six starters from 2013, with only one rostered senior. The Dragons, much like the Wolves, are a young team looking for freshman to step up in key roles. Junior Mollie Annen leads the team offensively with a .296 average. Kristy Bruni leads the team with three home runs on the year and five RBI. Morgan Nybo is back as the ace for MSUM recording three of the team's four wins.
